Teleconverter

Fitted between the camera and the lens to increase the focal length – narrowing the field of view and bringing distant objects closer.

A 1.4x converter increases the effective focal length by 1.4 times, but the drawback is that it loses one stop of light. In low ambient light this can reduce the light entering the camera to the point that an autofocus camera fails to focus.

Image quality may be impaired by a converter, depending on the quality of the converter and how well it works with the lens.

Sometimes known as extenders, and 2x converters are sometimes called doublers.
