Filter

Glass or plastic element added to a lens to affect the colour, tone or geometry of the image.

Filters normally attach to the front of the lens but some specialist lenses (such as some mirror lenses and fisheye lenses) have filters which fit behind the lens.

Filter can also refer to software processing of a digital image, sometimes simulating effects achievable with optical filters.
